The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
