Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
