The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
