Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the option to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
